In this article the results of laboratory investigations, concerning the behavior of metal and carbon electrodes of various shapes at the electrolytic reduction of cryolite-alumina melts are presented. The significant reduction in the anode consumption rate is experimentally proved at the transition of electrodes from rectangular to oval shape in cross-section. The considerable difference in kinetics of oxygen evolving and carbon anodes was found. The consumption rate of metal anodes increases exponentially with increase of current density, transforming the rectangular and oval shapes into the wedge-like shape. The consumption of carbon anodes behaves logarithmically. Obviously, the determining factor of the influence onto the anode consumption behavior is a level of polarizability of the electrode surface. At low polarizability within the range of current densities i = 0.4-1.2 А/cm2 for oxygen evolving anodes and at i ≤ 0.75 А/cm2 for carbon anodes the physical heterogeneity of the surface increases. With increasing polarizability of carbon anodes at the current density of i > 0.75 А/cm2 the roughness of the surface decreases. Composite carbon-based electrodes were used as cathodes, in composition of which titanium borides TiВ2x were synthesized during the standard baking at the temperature of 1050ºС under the layer of petroleum coke.
